FAQs
Frequently asked questions
Where do I start?
Functional Patterns is a training system designed for everyone. The best place to start is a posture and gait assessment, so we can see exactly how your body is moving. From there we guide you step by step so you can apply the techniques effectively, without skipping the foundations.
How long will it take to fix my dysfunctions?
It’s taken many years and a lot of stimulus to get your body to this point. Much of that stimulus is of the incorrect kind (in relation to human biology), creating muscle and joint imbalances.
Reversing these imbalances while instilling new patterns takes time and is different for everybody. Our results pages give a rough, non-specific idea of how long different conditions can take to rebalance.
Can I lose weight doing FP?
Losing or gaining weight is governed by many factors, genetics, work/life balance, environment, stress response, sleep cycle and your training regime. At FP we promote optimising all of these things coupled with biomechanics.
Functional Patterns encourages highly nutritious, anti-inflammatory foods in appropriate quantities, and adequate protein intake, which can work wonders for body recomposition and satiety.
Does FP build muscle?
Yes. Once the foundational work has been dialled in and your body is responding well, you can begin building using Functional Patterns techniques. The goal is always joint decompression and functionality, so the movements look different from a traditional bodybuilding routine.
You’ll be able to achieve more symmetrical, functional muscle mass with far less chance of injury, and because it’s built in line with the gait cycle, it’s more likely to stick around even when you dial back your training.
Can I train with previous injuries?
Yes. First and foremost we look to get to the root of your biomechanical dysfunctions. When you perform the exercises with respect to the patterns and sequences found in running, throwing and walking, the outcome is functionality without the pains and strains.
Previous injuries are one of the driving factors for poor biomechanics, they change the way we move to avoid further pain, and that adaptation is never symmetrical. We work to safely get your muscles and movement sequences functioning symmetrically again.
Do you train with kids?
Yes, Functional Patterns is designed for everyone, and we’ve trained many kids in our facility. The main requirement is the ability to hold focus and engage with the training, which helps ensure optimal results.
Do I need to bring anything?
We train in the gym with minimal excess, no need to bring towels or shoes, as we train barefoot. Shorts are preferable, as well as crop tops or sports bras, so we can see as much of the body as possible to accurately assess and analyse your movement.
How often should I train?
We recommend training once per week with one of our biomechanics practitioners in the gym. You can then supplement this with exercises at home as directed by your practitioner.
